Staying one step ahead

There’s a new face at the front desk. General manager, Lesley Plutsick joined Clico in March.
For Plutsick, who has hospitality experience from all over South Africa, working at a boutique hotel such as Clico beats the hustle and bustle of the bigger hotels. “Clico is personal, luxurious, small and intimate,” says Plutsick. “We offer most of the luxuries of a hotel, but in more comfortable surrounds,” she adds.
Plutsick says she has to handle a number of different roles, but her main concern is that the guests are always happy and that their needs are met. “It’s always nice to see return guests,” says Plutsick, “then you know you’re doing a good job”.
Her varied career in hospitality – from large hotels to holiday resorts to boutique hotels – has helped her learn the tricks of the trade. One of the key aspects is “staying one step ahead of the guest, anticipating what they’re going to ask for and having it ready on hand,” says Plutsick. “Handling a guest correctly after a long day of meetings or a difficult trip is really important,” she adds.
At the moment, Plutsick says Clico’s clientele leans towards the corporate side, although there are a few leisure guests. “Most of our guests are high-powered or high-profile,” she says.
Visits from notable authors are especially exciting, says Plutsick, an avid book reader. She also enjoys watching sport. “Cricket more than rugby,” she says.
So where to from here? “Nowhere,” says Plutsick. “This is where I want to be.”
